September 21, 1962. Bob Gibson suffers a fractured ankle while taking batting parctice. Turning away sharply from a pitch he caught his spike. He was the scheduled starting pitcher for the Cardinals against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Sandy Koufax. Curt Simmons replaced Gibson and the Cardinals went on to win 11-2. Gibson was done for the year with a 15-13 record, 2.85 ERA, 30 starts, 15 complete games, 208 strikeouts, 5 shutouts and was selected to both all-star games. By far his best year to date.
