It appears Mickey didn't play any organized baseball from 1943 to 1947. In 1947 he played sandlot baseball for a team in Miami, Oklahoma, playing second base. They played throughout the northeast corner of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri tri-state area. Toward the end of the summer the Miami team played the Baxter Springs Whiz Kids in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Whiz Kids coach Barney Barnett was impressed with Mickey's hitting and after the game asked him if he would like to join the team the following year. He jumped at the chance.
