Mickey, Merlyn Johnson, soon to be Mrs. Mantle, his father "Mutt" and mother Lovell at an exhibition game in Dallas prior to the opening of the 1951 baseball season. The next day, April 11, Mickey would report to the Ottawa County draft board in Tulsa, OK to have his left leg re-examined as part of the review to keep his F-4 draft status. He was granted 4-F status just four months prior when it was determined that a high-school football injury left an infection in the left leg known as osteomyelitis. Mickey would join his teammates in Brooklyn on April 12th for an exhibition game against the Dodgers.
