In two minor league seasons, Mantle hit .317 in 1949 and .383 in 1950. Playing SS for Joplin MO in the Class C Western Association in 1950, Mantle led the league in hits (199 in 137 games), total bases (331), runs (141), and batting (.383). He also drove in 136 runs and had 26 homers in his second year of pro ball. However his progress at shortstop was not as impressive. He was unsteady in the field and his strong but erratic throws from the infield created a dangerous situation for those in the stands behind first base. Mnatle committed 102 errors in his two years in the minors, 55 of those coming in 1950, in 137 games.
