Johnny Sturm, middle, in 1949 as player-manager for the Joplin Miners, Yankee Class C minor league affiliate. He was player-manager for Joplin during the 1948 season also and was assigned to scout the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri region, in essence assisting Tom Greenwade. There’s ample evidence available that Johnny played a major role in getting Mantle’s signature on a Yankee contract in 1949.
