What's left of the grandstands at the high school football field. During a football practice in 1946, Mickey was kicked in the shin. A bone infection, known as osteomyelitis, developed which almost resulted in the amputation of Mickey's leg. Mickey’s mother told the doctors, no way, in it’s simplest terms, and in a mid-night run took him to a specialist in Oklahoma City. A new drug called penicillin was introduced and the disease went into remission. The disease would result in a medical deferral from the military and result in another controversy as the Korean War was in full force during his early pro career.

Mutt was against Mickey playing football from the get-go. However, it could be argued that he was actually better at football than baseball in high school. He was actively recruited by Okalahoma University legendary coach Bud Wilkinson and then OU quarterback Darrell Royal, who later when on to legendary status as head coach at Texas University.
