September 1946. 17 year old Whitey Ford playing for the Thirty-Fourth Avenue Boys in the Queens-Nassau semipro league, accepting the Lou Gehrig Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the New York Journal-American semipro league championship game at the Polo Grounds. Young Whitey's team won 1-0 in 10 innings as he ptched a two-hitter. He doubled to open the top of the 10th to break up the opposition's no-hitter and eventually scored the winning run. He then struck out the side in the bottom of the tenth, giving him 18 strikeouts for the game.
