Mantle with Barney Barnett, Baxter Springs Whiz Kids coach. The Whiz Kids was organized in 1944 and competed in the Gabby Street League, semi-pro. Mantle played with the team the full season in 1948 and briefly in 1947 & 1949. Barnett had a significant impact on Mantle's young career. it was in Baxter Springs where Tom Greenwade first discovered Mantle.
